Chemicals and other dangerous goods are always going to present a risk for transport and shipping companies so it’s very important to be aware of what goods can and can’t be transported together. Some cargo will have to be sent under a special consignment, even if it seems entirely innocuous, and goods like perfumes, food colourings and even electrical equipment can be classed as dangerous. The manufacturer should supply you with a Material Safety Data sheet which will give you all the information you need on the contents and chemical structure of your cargo. This will determine whether or not your consignment can be forwarded as regular cargo. If you have doubts or are not sure how it should be classified then the best thing to do is give us a call and speak to one of our Dangerous Goods Experts. We will then be able to determine whether or not the consignment should be classed as Dangerous Goods and can arrange shipment accordingly.
This type of cargo needs to be very carefully packed and unloaded at the destination dock and should be kept well away from other Dangerous Goods cargo. All docks will be aware of any shipments coming in that require special handling and will ensure that it is unloaded in a designated area to prevent accidents.
If the cargo does not fall into the Dangerous Goods category then it will be classified as Not Restricted and can be shipped in regular containers. Take a look at the guide we have put together below which gives you an idea of what goods can be shipped together. This is not a definitive guide so if you have cargo that is not on the list, do get in touch with us and we can give you further information.
